Planting Apple trees presented by Barbara Mulcahy
An apple tree costs approximately Euro 10.00 per Tree and in a good year will give you 6 months worth of Apples!!!!!!
Varieties - For cooking plant Bramley and Desert Apples are Cox Orange Pippin and Golden Delicious.
Irish Seed Savers have a wide variety of indiginous Irish Apple varieties for sale (Scariff).
If you have a small garden, you might like to try planting Cordon Apples which are ideal for planting up flat up against a wall in a fan shape. These have to be pruned after year. Recipe for French Onion Soup
4-5 Large Onions
3 Tablespoons Butter
2 Garlic Cloves
2 Teaspoons Sugar
300 ml / 1/2 Pint Cider
1.8 Litres / 3 pints Chicken or Vegetable Stock
6 slices bread
100g / 4 oz Grated Cheese
1. Slice big onions into rings
2. Melt butter in big heavy bottomed pan, add in onions and garlic. Stir to coat, Cover Pan, cook gently for 15 minutes.
3. Remove Lid, Add sugar. Cook onions gently for 45 minutes until soft and caramelized. Very Very Slowly, Check occasionally
4. Increase heat. Add cider, bubble, add stock, season, Bring to boil and simmer for 20 minutes
5. Toast bread and top with grated cheese - grill until melted
6. Serve in bowls with cheesy toast on top.
