BCI's Community Radio Project
The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland is charged with providing a framework for the development of radio broadcasting in communities throughout the country. This is a follow-up to the service once provided by RTE under their Community Access Initiative of the 1970's and '80's.
The structure under which communities may broadcast is strictly controlled and embraces principles of non-profit and community participation at it's core.
How is Community Radio Funded?
Community Radio is largely run by volunteers and with the support of a full-time station manager and perhaps a part-time administrator. In the initial stages of service and until sources of funding harden up, stations are usually run completely on a voluntary basis.
Operating costs are met from sponsorships and various forms of fund raising carried out at a station level. There is no central support from National or Local Government for the provision of Community Radio, however some support is available for training.

Community Radio is unique in that it is non-commercial, non-political
and is community-based and funded. Community stations have been
operating in Ireland for a decade and they successfuly cater for
audiences in communities from Youghal to the Inishowen Peninsula.
Jet-FM operates under the charters for Community Radio and all of our volunteers and associates operate under these these rules and guidelines.
